The 2020 JCR Committee (archived)

Alex.jpg

President: Alex Mann [He/Him]

I’m a third year BioNatsci and I was previously VP and a Welfare Officer. My role is to be the main interface between college and the undergraduate body.

My love of meetings has led me to take on this role and hope to represent the views and interests of Corpuscles to College. Look out for a constitutional review and the referendum on our new relationship with CSU.

If you have any issues you’d like to raise please come and chat to me. I’m normally found in hall, the library or at Leckhampton being shouted at by most of the football team for not giving them a penalty.

Niamh.jpg

Vice-President: Niamh O'Brien

[She/Her]

Hi, I'm Niamh and I'm a third year studying HSPS!

My main job is to make Alex look good and to generally be the JCR lackey, but other responsibilities include being head of the Welfare Body and running a COVID-secure Freshers Week. I'm also chairing the Constitutional Review Subcommittee, so if you have any thoughts on how to make our JCR more efficient, or our constitution less higgledy-piggledy, then don't hesitate to drop me an email!

I've previously been First Year Officer and a Welfare Officer, so I'm really excited about finding ways to help new students settle in and make Corpus their home too! Feel free to get in contact about absolutely anything at all - I'm here to help.

Sam Dixon.jpg

Secretary: Samuel Dixon [He/Him]

Hi, I’m Sam and I’m a second year engineer (as of 2019-20). I love some good admin so am well placed to answer any constitutional or organisational questions. I’m also the one to contact if you want to advertise something to the student body through the Corporeal or the new JCR Google calendar.

I’m easiest reached by email but can also be found in person: I’m incapable of cooking and so in Hall for most meals. Failing that, I’m probably in the Taylor working on an examples sheet or (more likely?) minutes for the JCR.

Will.JPG

Treasurer: William Clennell

[He/Him]

The Treasurer’s main role is to organise and implement the Budget, which is drawn up during Lent Term. All college societies (as well as members of the JCR committee) can apply for funding; Whether or not a request will be successful depends on how the funds will be used and the number of people attending the society. All societies are also eligible to claim “Squash” funding, equal to £3 per person up to a maximum of £60.

During the rest of the year, the Treasurer is in charge of paying out money in line with the Budget (a receipt must be provided). Societies can also apply for funding from the One-Off Purchase Fund, which is reserved for urgent one-off costs that couldn’t be foreseen at the time of the Budget. For the first time this year, all requests (whether successful or unsuccessful) will be published on the JCR website in the same way as the same Budget.

Beyond the JCR, my interests lie in cricket and bridge, so if either of those appeal to you then we’ll probably cross paths eventually.

Eleanor.jpg

LGBT+ Officer: Eleanor Rist [She/Her]

Hello! I’m Eleanor, a second year BioNatSci. My job, apart from bringing obnoxious amounts of denim and blue hair dye everywhere I go, is to provide support for all members of the LGBT+ community at Corpus, whether your identity is something you’ve recently discovered or is something you’ve been comfortable with for a long time. My aim is to do this by plying you, the Corpus Gay Collective (CGC), with food, memes, and LGBT+ films of varying quality (keep your eyes trained on that Facebook page). I’m really keen on community engagement and absolutely welcome your suggestions- please feel free to DM or email me (or pop a note in my pidge if you want to remain anonymous) about things you think I could or should be doing. I’m always very keen to have a chat and provide support of any kind over a cup of tea (not necessary but encouraged) and biscuits (vital) so please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me.

When I’m not dyeing my hair or draping myself in flags (be they rainbow or Welsh) I can be found in a lab somewhere or in Corpus Chapel as a member of the choir.

Hero.jpg

Gender Equalities Officer: Hero Bain

[they/them]

Hi peeps! I’m Hero [they/them], a gender-chaotic third year EarthSci which means I am usually looking at/thinking about/reading about rocks. I’m your Gender Equalities Officer, here to fight against gender discrimination and stereotypes in (and occasionally outside of) college. My jobs are varied and include: providing free period products in boxes in college laundry rooms, running discussion groups with Isherwood Agender, the college gender and feminism society (check us out on Facebook), running various events for women and other marginalised genders, and organising film nights showing films featuring positive gender representation. Also just generally deconstructing gender, so please feel free to chat to me about that!! I am also here to support people experiencing gender discrimination, or any other forms of gender based harassment (if it comes to that); whether you just want someone to chat to, or support in making more formal complaints to college/the university, please contact me by email (hrb47), Facebook messenger, or text message (my number is on the welfare forms in bathrooms).

When I’m not ruminating on gender, you can find me squirrelled away in the Earth Sciences department reading papers, or singing in the college chapel with the choir.

Looking forward to a year of smashing gender with y’all! Big love <3

Ethnic Minorities Officer:

Zachary Aw Zheng Quan

[He/Him]

Hey! I’m Zac, a first year Engling of Malaysian Chinese descent from the quaint city of Kuching, Sarawak. In my capacity as Ethnic Minorities Officer, I work for the greater interests of the BAME community here in Corpus, particularly in representing students from a minority ethnic background in decisions or policies of the JCR. I’m a firm believer in open discourse, and I organise workshops and BAME-themed ParTeas to serve as starting points for constructive conversation.

Please do not hesitate to contact me should any issue arise, or just for a chat!

[He/Him]

I’m Harry, a third year studying English.

Feel free to say hello or ask for a chat. We’re here to help you deal with the ups and downs of Cambridge life and can help you access the extensive support network available in Corpus.

This year is going to be an interesting one for everyone. We’ll do our best to make sure your welfare is the College’s priority as we all adjust to the new ways of doing things.

Kit.jpg

Welfare Officer: Kit Edgecliffe-Johnson

[He/Him]

Hi, I’m Kit, a second year HSPS student and the newest member of the JCR. I’ll be taking over from Niamh’s capable hands in October and running Welfare alongside Harry and Patricia.

I’m always happy for a chat about anything on your mind, and can be reached at my email (ke317@cam.ac.uk), or through the Welfare contact form. This year I’ll be running ParTeas, social events, film nights and more, as well as helping out around college wherever I can.

Lachlan.jpg

Entertainments Officer: Lachlan Chavasse

[He/Him]

Hi I’m Lachlan and I’m this years ents officer. My main role is to organise the slacks throughout the year so keep an eye out for some juicy themes – maximum effort is most appreciated :)

corpus challenge.JPG

Sports and Societies Officer: Marcus Hicks

[He/Him]

Hi, I’m Marcus Hicks and I’m this year’s sports and societies officer. This means I will be in charge of: organising the Corpus Challenge alongside Chloe; gym inductions; the annual 5-a-side tournament; the corpus societies fair and of course the freshers sportsday. In addition to this I am the person to come to if you want to register a new society and I’m always happy to get more going so everybody has a chance to do what they want at a college level. I’ve also got a good idea about football, athletics, squash and all the facilities down at Leckhampton so if you need a hand with anything just drop me an email.

Robin.jpg

Disabled Students’ Officer: Robin Denham

[He/Him]

Hi, I'm Robin [he/him] and I'm in my fourth year of studying MML. As your DSO, I represent students with disabilities, health conditions and learning difficulties on the JCR committee. I also run events for disabled students to socialise and work with the rest of the Welfare Team to ensure JCR events are as accessible as possible. If you want to chat about anything related to disabilities – or indeed anything else – please do get in touch! Whether you've had a disability for a long time, have only recently been diagnosed, or just want to find out more about disabilities and the support available at Corpus, I'm always happy to talk.

Academic and Access Officer: Tilly Wring [She/Her]

Primarily it is my role to make sure that Corpus is accessible to everyone, regardless of their background. This means I help run events like the summer open days, college tours and residential trips. These are important as they help bust a lot of the myths around Cambridge and show what a welcoming place Corpus is.

Access work at Corpus is really exciting as the College is trailblazing in many ways. The Bridging Course, a three-week pre-term academic course for students from Widening Participation backgrounds, is something no other Cambridge college offers and I am so excited to be part of it.

Of course, access work shouldn’t stop at admissions and I try to always advocate for initiatives within College to promote social justice and inclusion. This involves working closely with the liberation officers to make sure students are able to get the most out of College and Cambridge life. I am here if anyone needs a chat about admissions, finance or just class in general- always here to listen and help you make a sign.

International Students Officer: Abdullah Kattineh [He/Him]

Hi! I’m Abdullah [he/him], a third-year chemist. My main role is to ensure international students make the most out of the Cambridge experience! Being from Syria, I had to overcome a lot of difficulties to adjust to life here in my first year. Unfortunately, I chose to do all that on my own! I admit now that it was a big mistake, and I’m encouraging you here to reach out if you feel insecure or unhappy for any reason. I can’t wait to welcome you to college!

Catering, Accommodation and Facilities Officer: Greg Chu [He/Him]

Hi, I am Greg and I am a 2nd Year. As Catering, Accommodations and Facilities Officer my main role is to tell you the menus of the following week, including formals! I am also the person in charge of camp beds and changing the pool cue tips. If you have any questions or feedback you would like to give about college you can contact me.

Green Officer: Vincent Stein [He/Him]

I am a third year studying HSPS – and this years Green Officer! My job is pretty broad, but involves being in charge of running events and initiatives based around sustainability. I will try and make green events that are fun and engaging for everyone in College, while trying to ensure acting sustainably is as easy and fun as possible for everyone. If you are interested in hearing about green things, join ‘Corpus Green Society’ and follow our Facebook page!
